Prologue
O,
friends,
not
these
tones!
Rather
let
us
nicer [ones]
sound,
and
more joyful.
I
Joy,
beautiful
god-
spark,
daughter
of
paradise!
We
enter
fire-
drunk,
heavenly one,
your
sanctuary!
II
Your
magic
binds
anew
what
the
custom
sternly
divided.
All
men
become
brothers
where
your
gentle
wings
rest.
III
He who
the
great
fortune
attains,
a
friend's
friend
to
be,
he who
a
lovely
wife
wins,
add
his
jubilation
in!
IV
Yes,
he who
also
but
one
soul
his own
calls
in
the
whole world.
And
he who [it]
never
could,
he
depart
weeping
himself
from
this
band.
V
Joy
drink
all
creatures
at
the
breasts
of
nature;
all
good ones,
all
evil ones
follow
her
rose-
trail.
VI
Kisses
gave
she
to us
and
vines,
a
friend
proven
in
death.
Desire
was
the
worm
given,
and
the
cherub
stands
before
God!
VII
Gladly,
as
his
suns
fly
through
the
heaven's
splendid
design,
Run,
brothers,
your
course,
joyful,
like
a
hero
to
triumph.
VIII
Be
embraced,
millions!
This
kiss
to the
whole
world!
Brothers,
above the
star-
canopy
must
a
loving
Father
dwell.
IX
You
bow
down,
millions?
Sense
you
the
Creator,
world?
Seek
Him
above the
star-
canopy.
Above the
stars
must
He
dwell.

More Info:
  • For the words sung in his Ninth Symphony, Beethoven used 36 lines from Friedrich Schiller's "An die Freude" (Ode to Joy), about a third of the entire poem. Beethoven mixed these verses around a little, with some repetitions, and added a short prose recitative to the front. This quiz asks for all the words used in the symphony, in the order they are first sung but without repeats. (Note: Some of Schiller's more creative compound words are rendered as two separate words in the quiz.)
