XIs are composed of the players with the most World Cup finals appearances for each country but slightly tweaked according to position e.g. only one goalkeeper. Numbers listed are each player's total World Cup appearances, counting both starts and appearances as a substitute.
Yugoslavia, USSR and Czechoslovakia include appearances for all successor states, e.g. Russia, Croatia, Slovakia.
