When talking about languages, a "false friend" is a word that looks familiar to somebody from another language, either because it has the same roots or by pure chance, but has (developed) a different meaning. A "true friend" on the other hand is a word that means what it looks like - these are normally not 100% fits but close enough to gather the gist. E.g. "Schuh" and "shoe" are true friends, both describing footwear, while "Boot" and "boot" are false friends, since "Boot" would be "boat" in English and "boot" should be rendered as "Stiefel" in German. Some words can be true and false at the same time, if they have more than one meaning in one of the languages (German "Bank" can be a "bank" or a "bench").
