The Battle of the Java Sea was a decisive naval battle and the largest surface ship engagement since the Battle of Jutland in 1916. It was fought between American-British-Dutch-Australian Command (ABDACOM) led by Dutch Rear-Admiral Karel Doorman and the Japanese Navy led by Takeo Takagi. The Allies suffered a major defeat in the battle, fought on 27 February 1942, and in successive actions which led to the fall of Dutch East Indies and the eradication of the Royal Dutch Navy from Asian Waters.
