The Battle of the Barents Sea was fought north of Norway's North Cape on 31st December 1942 between the German Kriegsmarine and Royal Navy ships escorting the 14 ships of Arctic Convoy JW 51B to the USSR. The German raiders failed to inflict any losses on the convoy, although they sank two escorting ships in return for the loss of a precious destroyer. This infuriated Hitler, who subsequently ordered German naval strategy to focus on the U-boat fleet instead of on surface ships.
