The Battle of Coronel was fought on 1st November 1914 off of central Chile between German forces led by von Spee and a Royal Navy squadron led by Cradock. 2 armoured cruisers, including Cradock's flagship, sank in the culturally significant battle which arose from a series misunderstandings and surprises. The ageing battleship Canopus and the cruiser Defence were diverted away from the battle, but could have turned the tide in an otherwise easy, albeit temporary, German victory.
