The Battle of Cape Spartivento was another large, inconclusive, long-range naval battle fought on 27 November 1940 between James Somerville's British fleet and an evenly matched Italian fleet led by Inigo Campioni. The British, surprised by the presence of battleships they thought sunk, attempted a Malta Convoy, while the Italians, with the slight advantage, sought to avoid decisive action until superiority was clear. The battle was further proof of the carriers superiority over the battleship.
