The Battle of Cape Machichaco was fought on 5 March, 1937 off Bermeo, during the Spanish Civil War. A Nationalist heavy cruiser captained by Salvador Moreno Fernández intercepted Republican/Basque ships sailing in a convoy let by Enrique Moreno Plaza. The cruiser was spotted 20 miles north of Bilbao, and the action began. The Nationalists sunk a trawler, damaged two others, and captured the transport, suffering two casualties and light damage in return.
