More Info:
The Honda Point disaster of Sept 8 1923 was the largest peacetime loss of US Navy ships. 7 destroyers from DESRON 11, a group of 14 then new Clemson-class destroyers, ran aground at high speed off of Honda Point, located in the Santa Barbara Channel off the coast of California. The accident killed 23 sailors. The disaster, and the running aground of SS Cuba earlier that day, are today lamed on poor visibility, navigational error, and unusual sea conditions caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake.
