1870: Italy seized territory when French troops ceased to defend it (they were called to defend France against Prussia).
1888-1890: Signed treaties with local rulers to declare several protectorates. Organized as colony in 1908.
1890: Ethiopian Emperor allowed Italian control in 1889 after an arms deal and decades of settlement.
1901: After Eight Nation Alliance defeat of Boxer Rebellion, Italy receives this concession.
1911-1912: Italy conquered territory during its war with the Ottomans.
1917: Italy declared a protectorate after occupying in 1914. Left after rebellion & international pressure in 1920. Re-invaded in 1939.
1919: France ceded desert area to Italy after no German colonies awarded to Italy in Treaty of Versailles.
1919: The Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye grant Italy these former Austro-Hungarian territories.
1924: Britain ceded region to Italy as a reward for entering WWI against the Central Powers; incorporated into Somaliland.
1925: Britain & Egypt ceded territory to Italy as more WWI compensation.
1931: Italy defeated Senussi rebels and incorporated territory.
1934: Britain transfered region from Sudan to appease Mussolini's imperial ambition.
1935-1936: Following the Walwal Incident, Italy invaded and incorporated this territory. Italy failed to conquer it in 1896.
1940-1942: Invaded & annexed just before French-German armistice signed. Occupied additional territory 1942 after Vichy defeat in Maghreb.
1940: Italy seized from the UK upon entering WWII as an Axis Power; added to Italian East Africa.
1940-1941: Italy invaded, turned back by Britain within months. It invaded again with German support until turned back in 1942.
1941: Invaded in conjunction with Nazi Germany. Annexed some and administered the rest as puppet states.
1942: Italian & German forces invaded this Vichy territory in response to Allied success in the Maghreb.
