Chasen [in voiceover]: Back in Los Angeles, two men sat in a barroom listening to a newscaster tell his headlines...
Chasen [VO, as he walks into club]: I headed for Eva Martin.
[Clock dissolves from 4:50 to 5:00]
Chasen [VO]: A few hundred miles away in San Francisco, the case took another switch, which turned the next 72 hours into one long hideous nightmare.
Doctor [to Benton's body]: If you respond properly and my theory is sound, you'll be more famous dead than alive.
[Benton wakes up and sees Doctor]
Eva [to Chasen]: I haven't had a hamburger in the front seat of an automobile with a guy in a lot of years.
Chasen: Everyone on the force gets fed up occasionally with the job they do.
Chasen: When I got out of the air corps, I knocked around. Then I went to work for an oil company.
Chasen [to Eva]: How did you ever get mixed up with anyone like the Butcher?
Eva: I had a roommate who used to date Benton all the time. One day she packed and left for Chicago. Benton carried a torch for her and used my shoulder to cry on.
Lowe: You sober enough to understand? Joe: Yeah, I ran out of dough.
Chasen [VO]: The name of Paul triggered his hate.
Eva [into phone]: Operator, get me police headquarters.
Chasen [VO]: Who in their right mind would believe a man had returned from the dead?
Chasen [walking into Captain's office] You wanted me, Captain?
Captain: An identical twin could have the same pattern of whirls with only slight variations.
Captain: Ever hear of the Butcher having a twin brother?
[Eva sees the dead body of Joe on the stairs]
Eva: What happened? Bystander: Guy named Squeamy got thrown from the fifth floor.
Officer [about witness]: O'Malley, see that the young lady gets home all right.
Lowe: Look Captain, I'll make a deal.
[Multiple flashlights shine down long hallway]
Chasen [to Eva]: The important thing is to remember, it is all over.
