At a length of 410 miles, the A1 is the longest numbered road in the UK. Its current route between London and Edinburgh at various points follows "Ermine Street", a Roman road connecting London and York and the "Great North Road", the main route connecting London and Edinburgh in the 18th and 19th centuries. Whilst only 133 miles of it is motorway and sections between Newcastle and Edinburgh are only single-carriageway, to this day it is still considered the main route through the East of Great Britain.
