Replaces wheat grain heads with smut (masses of spores)
Replaces barley grain heads with smut (masses of spores)
Replaces oat grain heads with smut (masses of spores)
Affected plants are slightly stunted, occasionally with yellow streaks on flag leaf. Grain replaced with black spores.
Kernels are replaced with black sclerotia
Necrotic blotches on foliage
Small necrotic lesions develop into large (sometimes coalescing) brown oval lesions with chlorotic halos.
Causes scald-like lesions on leaves, leaf sheaths and ears. Early symptoms are generally oval lesions which are pale green. Gradually acquire a dark brown margin. Chlorosis common.
First leaf often has single brown stripe extending whole length of leaf. Later leaves with short brown stripes and/or dark lines at random on leaves.
Results in whole or part of ear becoming bleached.
Sharply defined lesions on the outer leaf sheaths, multiple lesions occur up to 30cm from stem base.
Eye-shaped lesion with a dark margin, usually below the first node. Later, margin of lesion is dark and diffuse with central black spot occasionally.
Roots are blackened and rotten. Above ground may be detected by patches of stunted plants and bleached ears.
Leaves most commonly affected. White pustules appear which produce masses of spores. Eventually black spore cases are embedded in the pustules.
Sooty appearance and darkening of ears.
