The diagram represents the top left portion of a chessboard, with squares numbered a1 (bottom left) to h8 (top right). The rest of the board is empty, but is taken into account when counting the possible moves for each side. Only legal moves are counted, in particular NOT those which put one's own king in check. White starts at the bottom. Your task is to deduce the position and then work out White's best move. To select a square, click on the thin blue bar on its left. To enter ♔ ♕ ♖ ♗ ♘ ♙ ♚ ♛ ♜ ♝ ♞ ♟ use WK WQ WR WB WN WP BK BQ BR BB BN BP respectively. Type E in empty squares. To enter a move, give the moving piece followed by the destination square, e.g. Rg3, Nf2, Qd1, Pa7 etc. The puzzle can be solved without any guessing. Have fun!
