Walkthrough for Classroom Snacks Logic Puzzle
Since every person in a corner has a different snack (Emma’s clue), and no one’s name starts with the same letter as their snack (Anna’s clue), Carl cannot be grapes, apples, carrots or crackers. He must be a banana.
The three people next to Jose (Bruce, Lydia and Becky) all got different fruits. Neither Bruce nor Becky can be bananas, (Anna’s clue) so Lydia must be bananas.
Since all the corners must be different, Jose is either crackers or carrots. Lydia’s clue says that no one next to her got crackers, so he must be carrots.
All five snacks appear in the first row (Jose’s clue), but no one next to Lydia (including Jordan and Bruce) got crackers. This means that the only person who could have crackers in the top row is Rob.
We know from Carl’s clue that Becky got fruit, so she is either apple or grapes. Since she got the same as Amy (Rob’s clue) she cannot have gotten an apple, because Amy can’t have gotten an apple (Anna’s clue), so she and Amy got grapes. This means that Bruce had an apple since the three people next to Jose had different fruits (Carl’s clue). Since Jose’s row has all five snacks (Jose’s clue), Jordan must be bananas.
Jordan is next to two people with crackers. Rob is one, and the other must be Sam, since Gwen is next to Lydia and no one next to Lydia had crackers.
Since no two people with carrots sat next to each other (Bruce’s clue) and there are two people with carrots in Anna’s column (Sam’s clue), Peter and Violet must have gotten carrots.
Since everyone named after a flower got something beginning with “C”(Violet’s clue) Lily must have gotten crackers since she is next to Violet, who had carrots, and no two people with carrots sat next to each other (Bruce’s clue). Rose must have gotten carrots, because she is next to Lydia, and no one next to Lydia had crackers.
The first row is the only one with all five snacks (Jose’s clue), so Gwen cannot have had an apple. She cannot have had grapes (Anna’s clue) or have had crackers since she is next to Lydia, or carrots, because she is next to someone who had carrots (Bruce’s clue). By process of elimination, she must have had a banana.
Gideon must be a banana. He cannot be grapes (Anna’s clue), an apple (Gwen’s clue), or carrots since he is next to someone who had carrots (Bruce’s clue). If Gideon had crackers, then Fred would also have crackers (Becky’s clue), but Amy’s clue says that one row is all fruit. The only row this could be in the fifth row, so Fred cannot have crackers, which means that Gideon had not have crackers. This leaves the banana.
Four people got crackers (Gideon’s clue), and three already appear in the puzzle. The final person who got crackers cannot be in the final row, since it is all fruit. It also cannot be Dan or Miles, since Gideon says only one person in his row had crackers, or Eddie or Archie since they are next to Lydia (Lydia’s clue). By process of elimination, it must be Jane.
Rose must be next to someone who had an apple (Jane’s clue) but it cannot be Dan or Miles since they are in the fourth row (Gwen’s clue) or Archie (Anna’s clue). Therefore, Eddie must have gotten an apple.
Since Mike is in the fifth row, we know he got fruit. Since Mike and Eddie got different things (Peter’s clue), Mike cannot have gotten an apple. Since no one in Rose’s column got grapes (Rose’s clue), Mike must have had a banana.
Since all three kinds of fruit are in the last row (Lily’s clue) and since Fred and Simone got the same thing (Mike’s clue), they must both have gotten grapes.
Since Jose’s row is the only one with all five snacks, Archie cannot have gotten a banana. He cannot have gotten an apple (Anna’s clue), nor have gotten crackers or carrots since he is next to Lydia and Rose respectively. This leaves grapes.
Since two people next to Archie had grapes (Archie’s clue), Miles must also have gotten grapes. Since seven people had grapes (Eddie’s clue) and there are already seven people with grapes in the quiz, Dan could not have gotten grapes. Since four people had crackers (Gideon’s clue) and they are also already accounted for, Dan could not have gotten crackers either. He could not have gotten an apple, no one in the fourth row had an apple. He is next to Rose, so he couldn’t have gotten carrots. This leaves just banana.
