(Last Updated On: December 14, 2021)

If you’re out here trying to learn all the flags of the world you might have noticed a handful of colors keep coming up again and again. They might symbolize different things, but there are always more interpretations of colors than there are ones on the rainbow. But there are only so many colors, which is why we end up with flags that look pretty similar. Back to colors, what are the most common flag colors?

Red, White, and Blue Are Not Special

You probably picked up on this almost as soon as you started looking at flags in aggregate. A lot of them feature a red, white, and blue color combination. 29 flags feature the same red, white, and blue color pattern, which is the plurality of all flags worldwide. Some flags have a coat of arms on them, most of which feature other colors (commonly you’ll see a dash of yellow). The main body of the flag itself is still red, white, and blue, so we did still include those flags. Those flags are marked with an asterisk for those who are feeling extra strict about it, though.

The Most Common Color

Through the process of elimination you probably figured out that the most common color was either going to be red or white. We’ll give you a second to take your pick, it’s a 50/50.

Take a minute.

If you guess red, then bingo, red is on by far the most flags. It’s also the most common dominant color on flags (where red is the majority of the flag). Just the shade of red used on the American flag alone shows up in 14% of all national flags. Red appears on 45 of all national flags, in case you were wondering.

Speaking of colorful flags, what about some edible ones here?
