Countdown to Four Billion: Celebrating Sporclers

As we’ve said many times, and as we will continue to say for years to come, Sporcle wouldn’t be much of anything without its users. The same was true when we reached our three billionth play on April 2, 2019, as you all helped make that milestone dream a reality.

The next milestone, four billion plays, will no doubt be met any day now, so we thought that this was the perfect time to celebrate the contributions and efforts of Sporclers across the board. Below, we’ll review some of the user-related highlights from the years between April 2019 and now, including users who received their first publishes and those who took on new roles. If you’d like to read more about changes on Sporcle since our three billionth play, feel free to check out our posts on quiz updates and site features!

First Publishes

While the scheduling team often relies on established quizmakers and their various series, it is just as important to make sure that we are giving space and attention to quizmakers who, for one reason or another, have yet to be published.

As of the writing of this post, 5,520 discrete quizmakers have received a publish in the history of Sporcle. One thousand of these unique users has been published since our three billionth play on April 2, 2019, and 453 of these thousand received their first publish in that time!

A few days after we hit three billion, LAMS_Lyrics and s-p-o-r-c-l-e both got their first publishes on April 5 with Sara Bareilles ‘Love Song’ Lyrics and Border Flags Combined, respectively. The most recent first publish as of this post occurred Saturday, April 14, when FlyingZambini’s Which City (by Picture) Is Farther North? was published.

There is always room for improvement where the schedule is concerned, and we continue to make an effort to publish more unique users and give those who have heretofore been ignored space to shine.

Quizmaker Badges Earned

Since April 2, 2019, Sporcle users have collectively earned an impressive 16,104,714 badges. For the purposes of this post, we wanted to highlight some of the quizmakers who managed to meet all the requirements for a few of the more laborious publish-related badges.

Perhaps the pinnacle of quizmaking, the Crazy Ivan badge calls for a published quiz in each of Sporcle’s 15 quiz categories. In April 2019, 78 users had earned the Ivan, which has grown to 107 as of the writing of this post: metakoopa99 was #78, right after three billion plays, and Darzlat was #107.

Similar to the Crazy Ivan, the Honor Roll badge requires a Curator Pick in every category, and the Dean’s List requires an Editor Pick in every category. Since reaching our three billionth play, the number of users with these badges has increased from 147 to 196 and from 114 to 153, respectively.

Additionally, after the three billionth play, we realized that Ivan was getting a bit lonely, so we decided to introduce him to a new partner badge, Insane Olga, which was released on December 29, 2020. To earn this new badge, users must have a quiz published in each of the eight quiz types (e.g. Classic, Clickable, Slideshow, etc.). In the less than four months since Olga made her debut, 35 users have fulfilled her requirements, and we’re certain that there will be many more to come.

Role Revisions

Over the past two years, there has been a shifting around in Sporcle’s inner circle of Moderators, Editors, and Curators. These are the people who help keep published content up to date across the site and make publishes possible: they find noteworthy quizzes, help the quizmakers turn them into the best quizzes they can be, and signal boost them to Sporcle HQ with a perfectly placed Pick. As you can see, it’s a finely oiled machine.

Within this inner circle, we’ve said goodbye to a few friends and welcomed some new faces into the fray. In case you haven’t had the pleasure of interacting with them on the site already, we wanted to mention a small selection here and say thank you to them and to those who have come before.

In June 2019, JoeBeta stepped down from the Television Editorship, and lolshortee stepped up to take his place. You can still find JoeBeta around the site as a Moderator, a role he took on in July 2019, and as the Curator for the Song subcategory. In March 2020, lolshortee passed the Television Editorship baton over to Noldeh, who remains in the position to this day.

A couple months after our three billionth quiz play, El_Dandy joined Sporcle staff full-time, and we couldn’t imagine HQ without him. El_Dandy’s full-time gig left the mantle of Just For Fun Editor without an owner until hockeystix3 picked it up in July, in turn leaving the Literature Editorship open. That same month, strokes_static became the new Literature Editor, and Scuadrado snagged the Science Editorship from staff member bhenderson79.

The pandemic years (2020 and 2021) saw even more role changes. In April 2020, NJSB resigned as Religion Editor, and HappyWife took over. The next month, kfastic resigned as Gaming Editor, and pecheneg took over. Also in May 2020, DesertSpartan became a Moderator for a time, and HQ was so impressed that they made him a staff member in February the following year.

Sporcle sends a huge thank you to everyone mentioned above—and many, many others—for all they do for the site as a whole. We really wouldn’t be the same without you.

Celebrating Sporclers

We sincerely appreciate the time and effort that Sporclers put into the site, and if we had an unlimited word count in this blog post, we would shout out every single one of you. As long as we continue to work together to keep content relevant, fun, and informative, there are truly no limits to how far we can grow.

We can’t wait to see who will get their first publishes and who will join the Sporcle inner circle (the Inner Spircle?) before our five billionth play comes along. If you’re interested in becoming an Editor or Curator, send us a message when you see an opening—and happy countdown to four billion!
