Sporcle’s Statement on Harry Potter

We want to take a moment to make the statement that we disagree with the actions and words of the creator of the Harry Potter series; they are wrong and offensive. Sporcle loves Harry Potter trivia, but not transphobia!

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” ― Albus Dumbledore

One of Sporcle’s core values is inclusion and we would like to use this moment to affirm that all people will always be welcome at our trivia events, on our website, as our employees, and in our community. Sporcle does not discriminate based on gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, or any other factor that makes you who you are.

The creator of the Harry Potter series does not profit from our trivia events. To ensure this continues, our commitment going forward is to only cover the original Harry Potter books and films in our trivia, not any new content by the creator of this series. This allows you to not buy the books, movies, or official merchandise.

We also donate a portion of revenue from every Harry Potter live trivia theme event to either The Harry Potter Alliance, an organization who uses the power of story to make activism accessible and sustainable, or a similar LGBTQIA+ social justice nonprofit. (If you have suggestions for what this charity should be, please email themes@sporcle.com.)

We encourage you to read fan fiction, buy books by trans authors, support trans people and causes. Please also hold on to what was valuable in the Harry Potter series to you, what these stories meant to you.

“Trans women are women, trans men are men, and nonbinary identities are valid.” – Eddie Redmayne
