Sporcle is hosting hundreds of virtual live trivia games each week. These virtual live pub trivia games are played using Zoom. They are live-hosted by one of our nationwide team of trivia hosts (maybe even the one you used to play with in bars!).
It is a team-based activity; your team can have as many people on it as you want, but you can only have a maximum of 10 devices per team. Just as pub trivia is more exciting with friends, so is this game, so be sure to invite them to join you.
When the time comes to play, everyone will log on to Zoom. The host will explain the rules and manage all the behind-the-scenes details. You get to sit back, relax, have a snack, and think while you drink. After the host asks each trivia question, they will then send you and your teammates to a private room where you can discuss the question and decide on your answer. Nearly 50% of the game is spent in this room hanging out with just your friends and family!
We like to keep these games a bit more intimate, so your team will never play against more than 11 other teams. This leaves plenty of time to get to know the host, chat about the questions, and meet other trivia lovers from across the country – if not world.
How much does it cost?
The cost for a virtual live trivia game is $5 per device for an hour-long game and $8 per device for a two-hour-long game. Device means a phone, laptop, desktop, iPad, or anything that you use to connect to the internet. You can play solo on your own device or you can gather your household together and ChromeCast to the TV.
Which game should I play?
Sporcle is now hosting hundreds of games of virtual live pub trivia in multiple formats each week. When you’re looking for a game to play, we recommend starting by picking a general day and time when you and your friends are available.
Then, pick the topic – do you want to play a general knowledge game, or a themed game focusing on a category of trivia or a pop culture topic? If you choose general knowledge, then you have multiple all-topics formats to choose from: Sporcle Live, Stump! Trivia, OpinioNation, In The Know, 50 Qs.
Please note that there is only one set of questions per game type each night. So if you play a game of Sporcle Live trivia at 8pm, the game of Sporcle Live at 10pm will use the same questions (and therefore be significantly less fun to do again). If one hour of trivia per night is not enough for you, we recommend mixing-and-matching formats: play Sporcle Live at 8pm, then a theme at 9pm, then Stump! at 10pm. Or come back the next day for all new questions!
What happens when I buy a ticket?
Tickets can be purchased at sporcle.com/virtual up to 7 days in advance. You can buy a ticket for just your own device, or for up to 10 devices on behalf of your teammates. If you’re not yet sure who will be playing on your team, that’s okay – when you register, you’ll be sent a confirmation email which will include a private purchasing link you can forward to your friends. Using that link, they can purchase their own device and be automatically added to your team.
Pro-tip: games do tend to sell out. If you want to guarantee a spot for your team in any game, buy a 1-device ticket now and add teammates later.
The confirmation email will also include a custom link to join the “virtual pub” for your allotted time. This is the link you will want to forward to anyone whose device you have already purchased. About 15 minutes before the start time, everyone should click on that link. From there, your trivia host will take care of everything – welcoming you to the game, explaining the rules, asking the questions, collecting answers, keeping score, and of course announcing the winner.
Last but not least, we recommend you download the Zoom app if you have not done so already.
What do we get for winning?
Because it’s hard to prevent cheating during virtual trivia, prizes are awarded in a giveaway. Every team that plays trivia gets one entry into a weekly giveaway. Teams that win a game of trivia get an extra entry. Therefore, the more you play and the more you win, the more likely you are to be drawn. Each week we’ll pull a winner from the entries. If it’s you, you’ll be able to choose between a $100 gift card to any bar that normally hosts Sporcle Live, Stump! Trivia, or OpinioNation or a $50 Amazon e-gift card.
We have a few select games that award gift card prizes. They are a chance to connect with nearby trivia lovers and support local bars and restaurants who need help during the shutdown.
Anything else I should know?
