Life’s way too short to have boring birthday parties.
You’re never too old for a party! Whether you’re looking to be intrigued, reclaim your youth for a day, escape to a different time and place, or simply cut loose, we’ve got some birthday party ideas for adults that will make your next birthday bash one you’ll never forget.
1. Escape Rooms
If you are looking for a unique and memorable experience for you and your guests in which to practice your team-building skills and strengthen the bonds of friendship, try an escape room! Escape rooms are themed rooms in which you must discover clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks in order to escape your room – all within a set amount of time. Escape rooms are available in many major cities across the world and offer endless adventures.
2. Destination Party
Would you and your guests enjoy a night of sampling exotic dishes? Consider hosting a destination party where each guest chooses a destination and brings a dish from their country or region of choice – be it Italy, Mexico, or New Orleans. Take a group trip to a museum or historic site beforehand, or visit a vineyard or host your own wine tasting to learn about wines from the region.
3. Decade or Birth Year Party
“The question isn’t what are we going to do? The question is what aren’t we going to do.” – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Were you born in the 1980s? How about an “all things 80s” party? Grab your Aquanet, strap on your neon pink belt, dig out those shoulder pads, and get ready to spin your guests “right, round” with an 80s dance night. Many cities host their own 80s dance nights – or you can host your own! Throw in a game of musical chairs, musical charades, or finish that lyric, or 80s-themed trivia; get your playlist ready and rolling, hit pause, then have your guests sing the next line. Top off the evening with some of the movies you grew up with – Sixteen Candles, Heathers, Footloose, The Goonies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, etc.
4. Murder Mystery Dinner Party
Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery? Murder mystery kits are available for purchase online, but if you don’t want to pay for a kit, there are mysteries available online for free as well or you can plan your own! Want to leave the planning up to someone else? Consider attending a murder mystery dinner party at a local venue. Depending on your location, you may even have the opportunity to solve a murder aboard a train, in the style of The Lady Vanishes and Murder on the Orient Express.
5. Gaming Night
Why not make it a game night? Are you addicted to board games? With so many board game options you are sure to find something for everyone. Want to make it an arcade night? Hit the local arcade, rent a mobile gaming truck for your party, or set up a gaming room at home. Throw in some party games such as “Twister” or “Beer Pong” and you’re set!
6. Childhood Themed Party – Endless Possibilities
“Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker.” – Willy Wonka
This is one you can really have fun with – because you’re never too old to enjoy the things you enjoyed as a kid. What is the one childhood birthday party you’ve never forgotten? What were your favorite toys, games, movies, etc. growing up? Maybe your favorite movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Host a viewing of your favorite childhood flick, hand out goodie bags full of coordinating treats – chocolate-covered blueberries anyone? – or string up a pinata. Or how about practicing your baking skills? Have each guest bring a cake and do a cake swap or whip up some edible cups and saucers. And don’t forget the chocolate fountain! Check out Etsy and Redbubble for themed party favors – yes, they even have golden tickets!
7. Pajama Party Sleepover
Who doesn’t love hanging out in their pajamas? Throw on your favorite pj’s or hand out pajama sets or gift bags containing socks, slippers, and sleep masks. Return to your girlhood with party games such as “Truth or Dare?” or “Would You Rather?” Need some fun and easy food ideas for your party guests? Set up a taco or pizza bar for dinner, a pancake or waffle bar for breakfast, and a cupcake and ice cream bar for dessert. Stage a birthday photoshoot with fun props to mark the occasion: hair rollers and nightcaps and teddy bears… oh my!
8. Book Character Themed Party
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to walk in the shoes of your favorite book character for a day? Well, now’s your chance. Ask your guests to dress up, keeping their choice a secret so that it will be a surprise. Next, ask each person to provide quotes from their favorite book(s), toss them in a hat, then start drawing and guessing which book they belong to. (Obviously, the person whose book quote is drawn will need to remain quiet – while looking as if they’re thinking really hard about the answer!) Consider hosting a literature-themed trivia event with Sporcle; you can get warmed up with some of our literature quizzes. Deck out some party favor boxes with book designs and include bookmarks, book lights, and gift cards to the bookstore for guests to take home.
9. Downton Abbey Themed Party
“Principles are like prayers; noble, of course, but awkward at a party.” – Dowager Countess of Grantham
There is a lot that makes Downton Abbey truly spectacular: complex characters, compelling storylines, picturesque settings – and of course – elegant costumes and stylishly oversized hats. If you’re like most Downton fans, you’ve probably fantasized about living in the Crawley’s post-Edwardian world on more than one occasion. If so, you’re in luck! There are many beautiful yet affordable costumes to be found online; so don your evening dress and white gloves and make it a night out on the town – or make it a garden party: serve tea and cakes, play a game of croquet, then finish out the day with a game of Downton Abbey Clue and a viewing of the Downton Abbey Movie. If you’re feeling ambitious, consider catering a full English dinner or English breakfast. Looking for some Downton Abbey Trivia? We’ve got you covered!
10. All-About-Me Themed Party
“Today you are You; that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” – Dr. Seuss
It’s your birthday – the one day of the year where it really is ALL ABOUT YOU! What would make an “all about you” birthday party truly perfect? – why, grilling your guests to see just how well they know you, of course! Create your own “all about you” themed trivia game, ask your guests to share stories and memories about you or how you met, and request that everyone bring a special birthday memento to commemorate the occasion. Looking for some themed trivia for you and your guests? Sporcle would be thrilled to host your next birthday party! For more information, head on over to our Special Events page.
Here at Sporcle, we believe that birthday parties can be every bit as fun and exciting as they were when you were a kid. Every year is worth celebrating. So let the games – and the celebrations – begin!
