The 20 Best Severus Snape Quotes

He’s the crabbiest wizard in the Harry Potter Universe, but he’s a fan favorite that everyone has grown to love. Professor Severus Snape was introduced to young readers in 1997 when author J.K. Rowling penned the first novel of the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He and the rest of the HP gang were embraced by mainstream audiences after they were introduced to the film of the same name in 2001.

In the Half-Blood Prince, fans in theaters everywhere whipped their heads to their companions and whispered “told you so,” when it was revealed that Snape was working for Voldemort all throughout the series. Forced to finish what Draco Malfoy could not, Snape cast a deadly spell that sent headmaster Albus Dumbledore to his doom.

But as the series went on into its final installment, fans began to recognize Snape’s soft interior after receiving hints about his tragic past. These hints culminate in an ultimate explanation (in the form of a montage) for Snape’s hatred for Harry, his actions against Dumbledore, and his true allegiance to the good side.

As a young boy, Snape fell in love with Harry’s mother while also being mercilessly bullied by his father. Snake dedicated his life to being a double agent for Dumbledore, all in an effort to keep Harry and his mother safe. When Lily and James Potter were killed by Voldemort, he never recovered. Up to the day he died, he remained loyal to Dumbledore, even staging the headmaster’s murder to protect Draco Malfoy. Snape’s actions were so heroic, Harry named his own child Severus.

In honor of the goth wizard we can’t help but love like we love our irritable uncles, we’ve chosen a few of our favorite Severus Snape quotes to share with you.

The 20 Best Severus Snape Quotes

Master of Shade

“Ah Yes… Harry Potter. Our new — celebrity.”

“Would you like me to do it now?” asked Snape, his voice heavy with irony. “Or would you like a few moments to compose an epitaph?”

“Well, it may have escaped your notice, but life isn’t fair.”

“Yes, it is easy to see that nearly six years of magical education have not been wasted on you, Potter. Ghosts are transparent.”

“That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger . . . Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.”

Possessor of Absolutely No Chill

“How extraordinarily like your father you are, Potter . . . He too was exceedingly arrogant. A small amount of talent on the Quidditch field made him think he was a cut above the rest of us too. Strutting around the place with his friends and admirers . . . The resemblance between you is uncanny.”

“Then you will find yourself easy prey for the Dark Lord! Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked this easily — weak people, in other words — they stand no chance against his powers! He will penetrate your mind with absurd ease, Potter!”

“So I give you fair warning, Potter . . . pint-sized celebrity or not — if I catch you breaking into my office one more time —”

“Do you know what I think, Potter? . . . I think that you are a liar and a cheat. . .”

Asking For Some Respect

“You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? It was I who invented them – I, the Half-Blood Prince!”

“I do not take cheek from anyone, Potter . . . not even ‘the Chosen One.’”

Harry: “Kill me then… Kill me like you killed him, you coward —”
Snape: “DON’T CALL ME COWARD!”

“You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making… I don’t expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses. . . I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.”

Snape: “This is your copy of Advanced Potion-Making, is it, Potter?”
Harry: “Yes.”
Snape: “You’re quite sure of that, are you, Potter?”
Harry: “Yes.”
Snape: “This is the copy of Advanced Potion-Making that you purchased from Flourish and Blotts?”
Harry: “Yes.”
Snape: “Then why, does it have the name ‘Roonil Wazlib’ written inside the front cover?”
Harry: “That’s my nickname.”

The Hero We Deserve

“I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter —”

Dumbledore: “The prophecy did not refer to a woman. It spoke of a boy born at the end of July —”
Snape: “You know what I mean! He thinks it means her son, he is going to hunt her down — kill them all…”

Scorpius: “A doe? Lily’s Patronus.”
Snape: “Strange, isn’t it? What comes from within.”

“One person. All it takes is one person. I couldn’t save Harry for Lily. So now I give my allegiance to the cause she believed in. And it’s possible — that along the way I started believing in it myself.”

“You have your mother’s eyes.”

Dumbledore [in regards to Snape’s love for Lily]: “After all this time?”
Snape: “Always.”

To veer out of the Harry Potter universe, our beloved Snape can be described the same way Shrek describes ogres—like onions! In other words, like the moody professor we all know and love has a lot of layers that influence his actions over the course of his storyline. His harshness, resilience, and capacity for love keep surprising us, right to the very end.
