Josh has been playing trivia under some of the most creative team names we’ve had the pleasure of laughing at! He uses holidays, current events, classic pop culture, and more, to come up with some real zingers. To recount just a few:
- The NeverEndgame Story
- The Night King of Queens
- Brexit Through The Gift Shop
- Bipolar Vortex
- Dungeons and Dragons and Diners and Drive-Ins and Dives
- Ghouls Gone Wild
- Tryptophantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
We corresponded with Josh, to learn a little bit more about the guy behind the hashtag and his many clever team names.
Where do you play trivia?
I moved back to Michigan from North Carolina in February so I’m still trying to figure out my life, my new job – as well as what my trivia routine is going to be. I’ve played multiple times at Basement Burger Bar in Farmington, Ashley’s in Westland – those two are Sporcle – and at the Library Sports & Grill in West Bloomfield – that one is run by MyTriviaLive.
Since Sporcle Live isn’t in North Carolina (yet!), where should trivia aficionados go if they’re headed to NC?
My favorite bar trivia events in North Carolina were at Vecino Brewing in Carrboro (I also wrote questions and hosted trivia there every other week), Steel String Brewing also in Carrboro, and Fullsteam Brewing in Durham.
What do you like most about bar trivia?
My favorite thing about bar trivia would be the friends I’ve made since I started playing. Free drinks aren’t bad either.
Where do you find ideas for the clever team names you come up with? What inspires them?
I come up with many of my team names the same way I study for trivia, by following current events and trying to laugh about it. Other names have just come from pop culture or whatever else is out there in the zeitgeist.
It seems like most of the team names you come up with are appropriate. Has a host ever declined to say a team name over the microphone for its offensiveness?
I’ve been asked to change my team name twice. Both names were ‘too soon’ after a disaster and were in bad taste. The hosts were right to do so. When I hosted trivia I’d only ask teams to change names if they were ‘My Couch Pulls Out But I Don’t’ – I’d ask not because it’s offensive, but because it’s unoriginal and lame.
Do you have an all-time favorite team name?
Many of my favorite team names have had a music theme with a before-and-after format. My favorites have been Blood Sugar Sex Magik: the Gathering, The Defenestration of Lauryn Hill, For Whom the Bell Biv Devoes, and my all time favorite: Bone Thugs-n-Hermione.
Anything else you want to share?
I don’t have many friends who can make it out on weeknights, so if you see me out playing solo and your team needs a social studies and pop music ringer, ask me and I just might join ya!
