Sir Thomas Sean Connery was born on August 25, 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The oldest of two boys, his mother worked as a cleaning lady and his father was a factory worker and lorry driver.
Connery dropped out of school at a young age to join the military and was living from paycheck to paycheck, picking up different odd jobs along the way when he stumbled into theater work in 1951 as a way to earn some extra cash on the side. Connery fell in love with the idea of acting while working behind the scenes, and began to pursue his newfound dream.
In 1953, Connery landed his first acting role in a New York Broadway musical called South Pacific. He got his big break a few years later when he landed the part of the iconic James Bond character for 1962’s Dr. No. While Connery was initially reluctant to sign on with a franchise for fear of being typecast, he knew the role would get him much-needed exposure and he finally agreed. The James Bond legacy was born.
Connery would go on to have one of the most successful film careers in Hollywood history, landing starring roles in many big screen classics like Murder on the Orient Express, The Hunt for Red October, and The Untouchables.
Among the numerous distinguished honors that Connery has earned to his name over the years are an Academy Award, two BAFTAs, and three Golden Globes. In 2000, he was officially knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Sean Connery is not only famous for his beloved quotes on the big screen. He takes a passionate stance on many things, including acting, the political affairs of his beloved homeland, love and, of course, life itself. Here are 20 of his most memorable quotes.
