Spelling counts on Sporcle. Most of the time, this isn’t too big of a hurdle. But when it comes to certain topics, like the Periodic Table or Capitals of the World… well, things get tricky. If you have a spell-check on your browser it helps, but even spell-check will stumble on McConaughey sometimes.
This list was created through a combination of guess rates on relevant quizzes, and a staff survey of spelling pet peeves. So without further ado…
Here are the Hardest Words to Spell on Sporcle:
Names are tough – they can come from any linguistic background, and they are relevant in just about every category of trivia. A lot of spell check tools just can’t handle them, and even the best ones will miss out on a lot of names outside the A-listers.
Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal
U.S. states still trip some of us up. They’re probably not the top tier hardest words to spell, but they’re probably some of the most misspelled by sheer volume. Countries and capitals are a little more understandable – sounding them out is a challenge depending on your first language.

Fictional People & Places
If you thought real world people and places were hard, good luck with fantasy. Technically all names are made up… but Daenerys still feels a lot more made up than Tiffany. From Harry Potter to Pokémon, there are plenty of fictional names to get stuck on.
Mirri Maz Duur
Phineas Nigellus Black
Even limiting to just biology, you’ve got everything from Coelacanth to Xoloitzcuintli – and good luck with any quiz that uses Latin. The periodic table is an obstacle course as well.
Even if you know how to spell a word normally, it can be all kinds of twisted up by the time it makes it into a movie or TV title. On Sporcle we usually accept the un-stylized version as well, but it’s definitely worth bragging points to know the “real” version.
