Sporcle Live Spotlight: Federation Brewing

Federation Brewing

Federation Brewing, Oakland, California

From band geeks to beer geeks, Matt Hunter and Aram Cretan laid the groundwork for a successful partnership in the back row of their junior high school band. Years later, after a weekend hobby “got way the hell out of hand,” Federation Brewing was established in 2014, with the bar opening in 2016.

With 11 beers on tap, food trucks, and a casual atmosphere, you’ll feel right at home. Every taste was created to catch your attention. The medley includes IPAs and stouts, with a red rye, blonde ale, and porter thrown in for good measure.

In the Weeds IPA, Federation’s flagship and a hybrid of an English IPA and an American Pale Ale, is a split base malt bill of Marris Otter and 2-Row and dry-hopped with Citra, giving it a balanced yet restrained approach to the West coast classic.

The Low Boy Oatmeal Stout has a roasted aroma with coffee and caramel characters making it lightly sweet with a dry finish of toasted nuts, barley, and just a hint of bitterness.

The best seller – Behind You! Blonde Ale – is designed to drink like a pilsner with the smoothness of ale. It’s crisp, clean, refreshing, and easy-drinking.

Rounding out the core choices is the Utopia Planitia Red Rye. A crimson-colored malted rye with a slightly spiced sweetness to balance the herbaceous California-grown Ivanhoe dry hop.

There are seasonal and limited beers on the menu as well, like the sour framboise, Jacklondon Jam.

Federation Brewing is socially conscious, too. When you visit and lock your phone in one of the lock boxes and give them the key, you get $1 off your first beer! And while your phone is safely tucked away without Google available, why not ponder 10 or 20 questions with Sporcle Live Trivia every Wednesday starting at 7 PM?

The tasting room features all of Federation’s beers, pinball, rotating food trucks, live music, and is dog and kid-friendly (as long as the dogs and kids are friendly).
