Downey Brewing Company, Dearborn, Michigan
Michelle Obama said, “You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.”
The founders of Downey Brewing Company know that all too well. The business was slated to start after a wildly successful 30-day Kickstarter campaign. The location was selected and construction began. However, a series of major delays – roof leaks, water damage, licensing delays, vegetation, and a car crash into a nearby fire hydrant – tested everyone’s resolve. “We had to muscle through it, around it, under it, over it — whatever it took. You have to try and stay positive,” owner Dean Downey said.
In November 2016, Downey Brewing Company opened its doors, and DBC’s adversity turned into the community’s advantage. The location on Prospect Street in East Dearborn opened and has eight beers on tap, ranging from blonde, pale ale, and IPAs to porters, stouts, and even a cider. Mr. I.P.A., DBC’s flagship IPA, is well-balanced and heavily dry-hopped.
Frequent customers are invited to join the mug club called, “The Dean’s List” – a play on owner Dean Downey’s name.
Although new to the scene, Downey Brewing Company has managed to weave fundraising into its plan, recently hosting an event for the Fort Street Bridge Park in March 2018. There is also YOGA every Sunday at noon and Sporcle Live Trivia on Wednesdays starting at 7 PM.
Downey is also pleased to announce that, after 18 months as a taproom-only destination, they are now distributing to local bars and restaurants within the Detroit metro area!
