Curator Knows Best: LabinotHarbuzi

Mastering the spelling of Kyrgyzstan is basically the Sporcle initiation ritual at this point.

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature LabinotHarbuzi, curator for the Soccer and World Cup subcategories.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I think it was back in 2012! We had lots of free time in college and my friends were playing some Call of Duty quizzes–it didn’t take long until I was navigating around Sporcle for numerous hours a day trying to master the spelling of Kyrgyzstan! About 2 weeks later I signed up when I learnt about the Quiz Lab and how much more Sporcle had to offer.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
My first subcategory, World Cup, had only been created about 4 months before I applied–skuban did a brilliant job as the inaugural curator! It was also only 5 months before the 2014 World Cup so I was really excited to get in the spirit of things and apply. As luck would have it, I was approved. About 18 months later, the Soccer subcategory opened up which was the icing on the cake for an avid fan of the beautiful game!

What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
Tough decision, there’s so many! A rather obscure one though– In Russia’s 2nd level of football, Baltika Kaliningrad and Luch-Energiya Vladivostok have to play each other two times a year. The journey (as the crow flies) is 7,368km, across 8 timezones. It’s a 13 hour flight from one end of Russia to the other, or you could drive, but that would take 10 days and 6 hours to get there and back!

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
Soccer: gazzso’s Soccer Cities Scribble Scrabble and jonesjeffum’s UEFA Club Crest Sillhouttes.
World Cup: chasmmi’s Most Successful World Cup Teams A-Z and micsou985’s World Cup Round of 16 Teams.

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
Soccer: Cutthroat’s Representing the UEFA Europa League and hilco’s Corrected UEFA Rankings (2016).
World Cup: Schweinsteignah’s Podium of Losers: World Cup and skuban’s Every World Cup 2014 Goal.

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
oldkent’s European Country by Second Largest City & bhenderson79’s Paint Europe!

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I often lurk around the Sports section, and also General Discussion and Sporcle News to keep up to date with everything.

How can Sporclers in your subcategories best contact you?
You can write me a beautiful letter and send it via pigeon post, or you can message me via Sporcle, whichever is easier! I also have an email address listed on my profile if people want to contact me there.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
Sporcle has a great eye for talent so it’s a little difficult! pecheneg has made some excellent Sports and Geography quizzes though! Also, for a playlist, I’d really recommend bortoluka’s Build Europe with Football Teams.

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
A friend of mine threw some cheese at me the other day,
I said “that’s mature”.
