When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.
How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I honestly don’t remember. My Sporcle account tells me it’s existed since September 2009, and to the best of my memory, I’ve been hanging around for quite some time before registering an account in the first place, because I wanted to keep track of which quizzes I had already played. I guess I must have had a life before Sporcle, but it must have been really dull.
Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
Despite hanging around for nearly eight years, applying for a curatorship didn’t occur to me for quite some time. Earlier this year, though, I decided to go hunting quite aggressively for the Honor Roll badge, which got me into contact with several Curators from all categories, and the generosity and helpfulness of every single one of them was a lot more inspiring than I ever hoped it would be. I decided I wanted to join the club, looked at openings, and when I saw that Nominee (a category that appealed to me immediately) was available, I decided to throw my hat in the ring. To my amazement, I was accepted at once, and happily started curating, enjoying it from day one.
In fact, I liked it so much that I soon started looking for an opportunity to curate a bigger subcategory than the one I had. Luckily for me, the opportunity emerged to switch subcategories with the great LarryHolmes, making me the curator for for the wonderful subcategory Actor.
What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
Ronald Reagan auditioned for a part in the 1964 film ‘The Best Man’, which is about a US presidential primary. He was rejected because the producers thought he didn’t look presidential enough. On a related note, when James Cameron was looking for an actor to play the Terminator, the studio suggested O.J. Simpson. Cameron rejected the idea, though, because he didn’t think Simpson would be believable as a killer.
What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
As there are so many too choose from, this cannot be much more than an almost random collection:
I love quizzes about classic Hollywood actors, so seeing a quiz like cronic‘s James Dean Films on Sporcle, short as it may be, just makes me happy. Another great quiz about individual actors would be BetterThanKate‘s Al Pacino or Robert De Niro. And to name just two examples of great quizzes about actors in general: I am really fond of Actors With the People They Portrayed by TonyH and Two Actors, Same Character by mitsuki1990.
What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
I will always champion a quiz about lesser known, vaguely familiar, and always reliably fine actors, so Propellerhead‘s Charactor Actor Pic Click was right down my street. Among my other favorite quizzes I have been able to highlight in the past few months are gingerlover‘s The Evolution of Samuel L. Jackson, Sheldon‘s Character Cutouts: Leonardo DiCaprio, and gandalf‘s Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau Movies (and not just because Jack Lemmon is my all-time favorite actor).
What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
I love a good crossword puzzle, and what gazzso did with The Emerging Crossword is just a terrific way of presenting crossword puzzles on Sporcle. ZYX created a very delightful and very British playlist, full of wonderful quizzes like So Very British. And shirleyalpha actually managed to create a word ladder puzzle that made me sing along with it Word Ladder: Summertime.
Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I hardly ever go to individual Groups, but rather go browsing the Sporcle Groups by clicking my way through the Recent Discussions and checking the threads from there.
How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
Sporcle Messaging is the best way to reach me. I’ll answer as soon as I can.
Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
This is a difficult questions, especially as I’m afraid to forget worthy quiz creators. I already mentioned gazzso, ZYX and shirleyalpha, but there are also chaosBEE, hatefulmissy, LisaSimpsonOH, PrincessMartell – I could go on and on, and I’m already feeling a bit guilty not mentioning so many others.
Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
I know no haikus.
Also, I don’t like dad jokes.
I think I’ll pass here.
