Curator Knows Best: jakethegoldfish

Goldfish, tortoise, or a human named Jake? We may never know.

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature jakethegoldfish, curator for the Author subcategory.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
During grad school I was working part-time doing research in a completely unrelated field. The days would get long if we had no participants, so I was looking for ways to fill the time. I found Sporcle on a website listing the best sites to waste–I mean–occupy your time. From there I was hooked.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
When curatorships were first introduced to Sporcle I was really excited. I am a voracious reader and jump genres and authors with some frequency. Being the curator for Author made the most sense.

What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
Agatha Christie, the prolific mystery novelist, disappeared for 11 days without any explanation. She doesn’t even mention it in her autobiography. It’s like life imitating art. The public was left wondering whether it was some kind of publicity stunt or a way to embarrass her unfaithful husband.

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
I’ll just leave this list of great Author quizzes by a variety of great Sporclers:
Mega Book Titles!
Author Caricatures
Author & Character Matchmaker II
Three Images: Guess the Writer
Famous Books: Before & After
Don’t Name that Novel
The Bookshelf
Master Librarian

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
I really enjoy the Display Case series by kfastic, and the Author edition is no less impressive. El_Dandy‘s Who Wrote That Book?, Cutthroat‘s Which Book A-Z, and william2‘s Authors (A-Z) are all great playlists on authors that I would recommend.

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
As a huge Marvel comic fan I keep replaying the Marvel Picture Finds from MitchellGoosen and ddd62291’s DC Picture Find: Batman. I also keep replaying rockgolf’s 🎬 Scattered Pictures 🎬 playlist because it satisfies a weird OCD to see the movie titles in this grid come together. I also find gazzso’s  Mixed Word Poems to be brilliant.

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I check the Curator group with some frequency and keep an eye on Sporcle TV and General Discussion.

How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
Sporcle private messaging. I’m really glad to have that feature.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
I really like the Marvel universe, so I think MitchellGoosen’s extensive Marvel maps need more attention. HappyWife and Rackie also do great work across their quiz output. needapausebutton has been a huge help with my quiz creation, so I would echo the others curators who say to seek his advice.

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
I went to a zoo recently. The only animal was a dog. It was a Shih Tzu.
