When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.
How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I do not remember what first prompted me to visit Sporcle.com, but I was happy playing anonymously for a couple of months, until the fateful day I just had to comment on a WWE quiz, and registered just so I could educate young fans about George “The Animal” Steele.
Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
I believe I was at the forefront when subcategories and curatorships were established. I offered my services to curate Anatomy because I have a minor background in medical transcription. After I came back from an 18-month hiatus due to illness, needapausebutton encouraged me to get back in the curatorship game and strong-armed me into taking up Word Play.
What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
Austin, Texas plays host to the O. Henry Museum Pun-Off World Championship every May.
What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
Purple_Parrot’s Badly Misspelled Signs, triviahappy’s Punny Penmen And Publications, and chaosBEE put a new spin on the old genre of Rebus puzzles with Idiom By Emoji.
What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
haggardhawks153’s The Haggard Hawks Palindrome Game, nabean’s Aesculpian Argot series, especially Part 2, and Soccer Puns by alinrotundu.
What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
My all-time favorite quiz remains the word ladder-qua-marriage proposal, Word Ladder: We Met in the Old North West. Outside of Just for Fun, gazzso’s playlist of poetry, Mixed Word Poems, and a niche quiz from HarveyNerdman, Sing Along: Rusty Chevrolet by Da Yoopers.
Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
Find The Star! For most of my guesses, I use a random sequence generator to pick a country, alphabetically, from 1 to 197, and, frankly, I’m amazed at my success rate. Kudos to xyz_ for establishing and maintaining this group!
How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
Sporcle messaging. Please, especially since I was diagnosed with a cataract (yeah, I’m old) I don’t notice things as quickly as I used to. A nudge in the right direction is ALWAYS welcome. ☺
Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
Among the current crop of Sporclers, I’d say christopherjulia, PaulKcensored and gingerlover. Newer Sporclers might not be familiar with the quizzes of gwukelic but he was my first Sporcle “friend”… and even though he may not be submitting quizzes now, I found his past output delightful. Check them out!
On the topic of Sporclers and their ventures, I’m happy to see other Sporclers reporting back from their visits to Sporcle HQ; delighted that they have experienced what I did in February, 2016. On the occasion of my visit, I coined a Portmanteau, Sporclemage, from Sporcle + pilgrimage. (But since Sporcle itself is a Portmanteau of Sports + Oracle, would that make Sporclemage a Portman-two?)
Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
Morning beckons me.

Pearl does a variety of media-related tasks at Sporcle, including blog writing, video production, and social media maintenance. She does research on penguins, enjoys snail mucus in her skincare, and once turned herself Sporcle Orange from eating too many carrots.
