When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.
How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
My daughter told me that she had found this great quiz website. We took a bunch of quizzes together and had a lot of fun. We played all the usual suspects, Countries of The World, Pixar Movies and the like. I wanted to make a Clips quiz so I made an account.
Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
Like many, I started to think that I should give a little back to a community that had become dear to me. Once I spotted that Movie Titles was free, I took the plunge. I was lucky as it’s a great category.
What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
The piece of trivia that has been the most important to my Sporcle career is that Mozart kept a diary of his flatulence, as it spawned the whole Odd But True series. As for a movie-related one, I would go for the fact that the famous sketch of Kate Winslet’s character in Titanic was actually drawn by James Cameron, the film’s director.
What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
Mother Daughter Image Match by JoeBeta, Stairway to Heaven Clicky-oke by manonthemoon, ★My Little Pony Or Porn Star★ by sproutcm, The Big Bang Theory: Who Sits Where? by braverobot, and Mothers in Art (Picture Click) by Aprilli.
How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
The Sporcle messaging tools are excellent; anybody is welcome to contact me this way.
Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
I believe that subtle skills of crafting quizzes are often overlooked. Picking the best quiz type, getting the difficulty just right, question order, and presentation all make for a better quiz. For me the best Quiz Masters have these skills. Someone like JoeBeta has this down–he could make a quiz about his laundry list and you would want to play it and give it 5 globes. I also have a soft spot for Aprilli and braverobot, neither of whom could make a bad quiz if they tried.
Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
A horse walks into a bar, and the bartender asks, “Why the long face?”
A bear walks into a bar and says to the bartender, “I’ll have a glass of beer and a………. packet of peanuts.”
The bartender asks, “Why the big pause?”
