We’ll save you the trouble of Googling: It’s Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature hockeystix3, curator for the Percy Jackson, Puzzle, and Year subcategories.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
In my school statistics class we were surveying the class to collect data to use. One of the questions was “How many countries are in Africa?” which led me to wondering how many countries of the world there were and how many I could name. One quick Google search later and I was playing Countries of the World which got me hooked.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategories?
I was working on a quiz with napb who mentioned that he thought I should be a curator and that Purple_Parrot was looking to give up either the Year or Decade subcategory. I took his not-so-subtle hint, as being a curator was something I had been considering but never had the confidence to apply for, and the rest is history!

After curating Year for a little while I was keen to pick up another subcategory and considering I read the Percy Jackson series almost as much as Harry Potter when I was younger (and still do very occasionally) that seemed like a natural fit.

When the Puzzle curatorship opened up I jumped at the chance to curate what is probably my second-favourite subcategory.

What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategories?
Percy Jackson: Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson series, has never seen the movies. Given how they turned out I wish I could say the same…
Puzzle: The longest word used in a crossword puzzle is a certain 58-letter Welsh town that I can neither spell nor pronounce. The clue was “Giggling troll follows Clancy, Larry, Billy and Peggy who howl, wrongly disturbing a place in Wales”.

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategories?
Puzzle: goc3’s Treasure Hunt quizzes are pretty cool as is World Landmark Jigsaw Puzzles.
Year: sufradley’s Things We’ve Learned quizzes are always very entertaining.

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategories?
Percy Jackson: The chapter titles are one of the great things about the Percy Jackson books so I enjoyed Missing Word: Percy Jackson Chapters and how could I go past Hangman – Percy Jackson, a Percy Jackson and Puzzle quiz?
Puzzle: goc3’s multiple playlists of Mosaic Logic Puzzles are great and though I love all sproutcm’s Paint-By-Number quizzes the multi-coloured ones are my favourite.
Year: A huge amount of work clearly went into kfastic’s 100 Years of quizzes and the results are impressive.

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
Literature is an entirely different category from two of my subcategories so it counts, right? I can’t not mention the masterpieces that are the Harry Potter Periodic Table and the Hogwarts Exam Series.

Infographic Snapshots of New Zealand is a sight to behold (I’ve spent heaps of time just looking at it) and the subject matter is chur! (I’m not at all biased)

kfastic’s Lets Draw the Borders quizzes are awesome and given I have a fascination with maps, particularly of the colour-coded variety, I think 30 Maps That Help Make Sense of the World and the sequel are pretty cool too.

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I use recent discussions but usually just hang out in the shadows and don’t say much. The only group I regularly comment in is Find the Star.

How can Sporclers in your subcategories best contact you?
I’m generally pretty good at replying to messages.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
Pretty much everyone that makes quizzes. But (as evidenced above) the likes of bhenderson79, kfastic, goc3 and gazzso (among others) always manage to amaze me with their quizzes and could never get too much attention. With all that he does for quiz makers, curators and Sporcle in general needapausebutton is another that deserves all the attention he gets and more. Plus, I don’t mind the quizzes he does find the time to make.

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
What do I curate?
Percy Jackson, Puzzle, Year
An eclectic bunch

On a twelve-hour flight
Surely I can do better
Nope, it appears not
