Curator Knows Best: El_Dandy

(Last Updated On: March 22, 2017)

If you do doubt him, we’ve got a few episodes of Jeopardy! for you to watch

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature El_Dandy, curator for the Movie Quotes subcategory.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I think I first stumbled upon Sporcle thanks to a quiz ESPN embedded on their site back when they were regularly contributing quizzes. I fell down the rabbit hole fairly soon thereafter.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
I previously got into curating because I felt it would make my own quizzes better and because I wanted to help out other contributors. The two areas I curated back then were Nintendo and Board Games and they were a blast. When I wanted to get back into curating, I thought about things I could jump into full bore and Movie Quotes seemed like a natural fit due to my constant quoting of movies in daily conversation.

What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat” from Jaws was improvised. So was the “You talkin’ to me?” scene in Taxi Driver. It’s actually quite surprising how many great lines were improvised (like most of Ghostbusters, for example).

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
Even though it was JUST published recently, I absolutely adore christopherjulia‘s When Harry Met Movie Quotes. It’s great when quizzes take unique and humorous spins on things that become common knowledge. I also love needapausebutton‘s This Is Spinal Tap: These Go to Eleven quiz because it’s one of my favorite movies.

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
TheCleverone has been making a series of Movie Monologue Maps that are all fantastic. This one from Trainspotting jumped out at me. Even though it’s a simple concept, I also like this Aaron34Heron quiz that asks to supply the movie title missing from quotes: Movie Quotes Including the Title.

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
For an extra challenge, I’m going to try to ignore Just For Fun, too! Propellerhead‘s Graphic Novelized Movies just might be my favorite quiz of all time. I also adore chair‘s Who’s Writing Green Eggs and Ham and just about every bhenderson79 Sporcle Quiz Show quiz (though this Celebrity Jeopardy! one might be my favorite).

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
Trophy Case and Recognition. I love seeing people’s accomplishments, whether it’s joining the Honor Roll/Dean’s List/Crazy Ivan or just celebrating cracking 1,000 plays. It gives me a chance to have some perspective and cheer on my fellow Sporclers.

How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
Messaging me is definitely the easiest way to get in touch.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
I’m a huge fan of christopherjulia, who’s been on fire recently. I think it’s cliche to say Scuadrado, but I love so many of his quizzes as well. I also think LisaSimpsonOH (and her fantastic movie quizzes) should be published way more.

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
I’m known to reply to my students who ask if I got a haircut that, in fact, I got all of them cut.
