Let’s all just hope he didn’t have Duke in the Final Four

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature DesertSpartan, curator for the March Madness subcategory.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I came across Sporcle in 2012 by stumbling across a quiz. I played for about two months and then got an account. I signed up to comment on a quiz titled 25 Greatest College Basketball Programs. The quiz was awful, but I love college basketball.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
I initially became a curator in October 2013 to help others and to be able to create more than 11 quizzes per month. I really enjoyed curating, so I added another category. In February of 2016, March Madness became available and it was a subcategory that I absolutely had to curate.

What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
There are so many great trivia facts about March Madness that I would have a hard time picking just one, but perhaps one of the best is that the 1979 National Championship between Michigan State with Magic Johnson and Indiana State with Larry Bird is still the highest-rated college basketball game in U.S. history.

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
There are a lot of great quizzes in the subcategory, but perhaps my favorite is March Madness Ransom Note by Stanford0008. I also really enjoyed NCAA Basketball Consecutive Final Fours by sportsguy360 and NCAA Tournament MOP by Ben.

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
One of my favorite contributed quizzes is NCAA Women’s Basketball Tourney 10-1 by needapausebutton. I love Famous NBA players in the NCAA Final Four by Dreamcast0102, States with 3+ Final Four Teams by mikenew, and 16 Seed Upsets (Almost) by naqwerty3.

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
Celebrity Guests on ‘What’s My Line’ by david6k, Honest Logos by RobPro, USO All-Star Variety Special (from 1957!) by rockgolf, and Sporcle Man and Bonus Boy by survivor. I also have many music quizzes among my favorites. I separated them because as Music Editor, it is like they are all in my subcategory. First I have to mention that the whole “Hits to Click” series and related quizzes by MSUKent and caramba are all brilliant. I really loved A Beatles Lyric Letter by felix, Not Bob Dylan Clips by JoeBeta (a really great guy and one of the true music quiz masters), and 100 years of Musicians by kfastic.

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
It is probably General Discussion. I am on Sporcle Groups a lot and check my groups when there are new postings and General Discussion has the most postings. My favorite group is Contests and Collaborations. I love running contests and collaboration is the cornerstone of great quiz makers. I think I am a pretty good quiz maker, but others are much better and collaboration is what taught me to become a good quiz maker. I often hear about the best quiz makers collaborating–amazingly these titans have even come to me for help. That is very thrilling!

How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
I love being contacted through Sporcle Messages. I think Sporcle Messaging is one of the best innovations made during my time on Sporcle. I am happy to review quizzes and make suggestions. As I said, collaboration is valuable. I also do not mind direct solicitation for Curator’s or Editor’s Picks. Some curators I know don’t like this, and at times there are a lot of quizzes sent for consideration. I answer all inquiries for help and all or nearly all asking for a pick. Some I know I will pick as soon as I see the quiz and some are kept for consideration or I suggest improvements to make it pick worthy. Most of the time I send back that I will consider the quiz, which is a non-committal response that I like.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
I almost hate to do this. In the old version of this blog, I picked khands and within weeks she became recognized. A year or so ago, I would have said bhenderson79, hatefulmissy, kfastic, gazzso, and Thebiguglyalien, who all are now giants. By the time this is a few months old, the same will probably happen to these quiz makers. mikenew has been around for a long time, but has really been in the shadows until recently. Samc67 has already started to explode, but still deserves a mention. A few others are christopherjulia, JeluPotter25 and KStericker, who all deserve attention.

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
I gave my father $100 and said, “Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my mother.
