And the Emmy for greatest Emmy Sporcler goes to…

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature tim_parr, curator for the Emmy subcategory.

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
I honestly can’t remember how exactly I found Sporcle, but it was originally in 2011. I remember becoming obsessed with getting 100% on the Countries of the World and Harry Potter Top 200 quizzes. I guess the rest is history!

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategory?
I only started contributing quizzes in 2015, which was when I decided to apply for a Curatorship. The one that I found most interesting was for the Emmy subcategory.

What’s your favorite trivia fact having to do with your subcategory?
An interesting bit of Emmy trivia inspired me to watch a show recently. There are three TV drama series that each were awarded nine acting Emmys. Those shows are Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and The West Wing. I’d already finished Breaking Bad when I learned this, but reading that ‘fun fact’ made me check out The Sopranos, which I loved. I’m planning to look into The West Wing when my schedule slows down some! Also, as a segue for the next paragraph, here’s an amazing feat. In 2004, the miniseries Angels in America went 7/7 in the ‘top’ Emmy categories. The series won Best Miniseries, Directing, Writing, Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. That doesn’t happen that often (or ever!).

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?
A recurring element in a few of my favorite, published Emmy quizzes when picking through all the great options is that quizzes featuring series that were stacked with incredible performances and consistent throughout their runs are my favorite. A show that can win 3 of the 4 acting Emmys in a single year must be firing on all cylinders: 3 Emmys in the Same Year. The same goes for a show that can put out amazing work year in and year out: Emmy Nominated Every Season.

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?
An unpublished quiz that I enjoy playing is (again) focused on acting: Most Acting Nominations (Emmys). I haven’t played it in a while, but it’s one that I’d like to eventually get 100% on. Another quiz that I enjoy is still an Emmy quiz but a bit different since it deals with soap operas: Daytime Emmys (Outstanding Drama). I think people often forget that the Daytime Emmys are still the Emmys! In 30 Rock, Whoopi Goldberg’s inclusion as an EGOT winner is questioned because she ‘only’ has a Daytime Emmy. I agree with her response: “It still counts! Girl’s gotta eat!”

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
This probably isn’t a surprise, but I enjoy Oscar and Movies quizzes. I’ve created a ton and played a ton, but I won’t pick any of those to talk about here. I’m a Harry Potter fan and always enjoy playing a good game. I’d say my favorite and the most creative quiz I’ve had the pleasure of coming across is the Harry Potter ‘Periodic Table’. The amount of time, effort and detail that went into the quiz is phenomenal. I enjoy Geography and Sports quizzes, too. I typically prefer City and NCAA/Football (i.e. college football) centered quizzes in those categories.

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
Badge Talk and Shameless Promotion are my two favorite groups, and I acknowledge I’ve been pretty MIA in Groups for a few months now. It is cool watching a badge proposal that makes its way to the badge page. I’d like to think that I helped with the Whole Lotta 50s Going On badge. Shameless Promotion is great, as well. When done correctly, newbies on Sporcle can get a lot of helpful advice while learning the ropes. Heck, I have posted in the past asking for much-needed and always helpful feedback prior to releasing a quiz! It is a great resource.

How can Sporclers in your subcategory best contact you?
The best way to reach me for questions, advice or even just to chat is via Messages on Sporcle.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
Unfortunately, I don’t have any newbies to mention. I’ve only recently started playing regularly after a brief sabbatical. I will say that michaeljgarman10 sent me a message a few months back when he released Word Ladder: First Friend. I was happily surprised to know that I’d helped a “fledgling.” Also, since I have the chance, I’d like to take the opportunity to say a big thanks to NAPB and bowsntoys for all their invaluable help through my years at Sporcle!

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
Why did Adele cross the road? To say hello from the other side.
