BillyJoelRulez didn’t start the fire, but he certainly is on it.

When it comes to Sporcle, curators truly do know best. In this blog series, some of the great curators of Sporcle share their expert opinions on curating, top-notch quizzes, up-and-coming Sporclers, and a wee bit of trivia.

This week we feature BillyJoelRulez, curator for the Christmas and SpongeBob subcategories, former curator for the Console and Mario subcategories, and new Gaming Editor!

How did you first get involved with Sporcle?
In December 2009, some cousins showed my brother and me the Countries of the World quiz and probably some others, and I played quizzes periodically for a while until I decided to make an account in June 2010.

Why did you decide to be a curator for your subcategories?
My first subcategory was Console, which I took in April 2014, and that was really just because I wanted to be more involved and I was decently knowledgeable on the topic. I really wanted to curate the Mario subcategory, which opened up a few months later in July and became my second subcategory. In November 2015, I applied for the Christmas subcategory partially because I wanted a third subcategory and I know some about it, but also because the holiday season was really close and there was no Christmas curator. Lastly, in May of this year the SpongeBob subcategory opened and I decided to apply for that spot since it was one of my favorite TV shows growing up.

What’s your favorite trivia fact regarding each of your subcategories?
Mario: Waluigi, who is many fans’ favorite character (and my second favorite), debuted in 2000 in Mario Tennis, and since then has never managed to appear in a main series game. His most important role in a game is as a secondary antagonist in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix.
SpongeBob: Tom Kenny is most well known as the voice of SpongeBob, but has voiced over 20 characters on the show, including main characters, such as Gary, and less major characters, such as Patchy the Pirate and SpongeGar.

What are some of your favorite published quizzes from your subcategories?
Mario: Mario Game Medley
This is one quiz that I played many times before I created an account, so much that I had the order memorized at one point…
Christmas: Christmas Songs in Latin
I’m kind of a Latin nerd as well.
SpongeBob: Spongebob Episodes: Squidward or Not
This quiz really tests your memory since in some of these episodes he only has a brief cameo, or it seems like he’d be there but just isn’t.

What are some of your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategories?
Mario: Mario Bunker
It is my quiz, but I still really love it because even a hardcore Mario fan has a large chance of not being able to answer the questions without taking a few extra tries.
Console: Best-Selling Video Games by Best-Selling Consoles (MAP)
This is a clever idea for a quiz executed perfectly.

What are your favorite quizzes from an entirely different category?
I really enjoyed I Just Meant ‘Speed Up’ simply for the humor in the quiz-it also took me a good while to complete it well. Pokemon… In the Theme Lyrics? also has a really cool concept and is unique. Of course, you also can’t go wrong with the Countries of the World quiz.

Which Sporcle Group do you frequent most often?
I don’t post on Groups often, but I read most of the topics in General Discussion.

How can Sporclers in your subcategories best contact you?
I can be reached easily through Sporcle Messages or using the email address on my profile.

Are there any Sporclers whose quizzes you think merit more attention than they get?
Zacharyyale has come back recently after being gone for some time, and he consistently makes good Gaming quizzes when he’s around from what I’ve seen. I’d also say that chaosBEE has been making a slew of great quizzes in many categories and deserves a bit more recognition. _pressure82_ has made many high quality quizzes recently as well and deserves more attention.

Haiku or favorite Dad Joke (or both):
I have work to do.
It’s already 10:30.
Okay, one more quiz.
