Better Know a Curator: Purple_Parrot

(Last Updated On: November 15, 2019)

This is part of Sporcle’s long-running series highlighting our hard-working curators. Curators are editors for a specific subcategory, and their diligent work finding great quizzes from their subcategories (and sometimes others) helps to shape the site. We asked our curators to complete an interview of sorts, and we’re sharing their responses here on the blog.

This next post is from Purple_Parrot, curator for decade and year.

1) How did you first get involved with playing Sporcle?

Two friends of mine had a “Countries of Africa” face-off a few years ago. That first exposed me to Sporcle. For the next couple of years, I played a few games here and there. Then last January, I visited the site more often, and I wanted to comment on and contribute quizzes, so I made an account!

2) What are your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?

I love the “Decade” subcategory because it is such a broad topic. Almost anything goes, so there are a nice variety of quizzes. Although I was not yet curator when survivor’s New Foods by Decade was published, I like how the quiz is designed to be simple yet effective.

3) What are your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?

I would say that Flick’s Decade: Toys & Games quiz and Anonymous42’s Least Populated States (1890-2000) are quite enjoyable, but they are by no means the only ones.

4) What are your favorite published quizzes from an entirely different category?

Some of my favorite Sporcle games include Matt’s Countries of the World and napb’s Smallest-to-Largest Minefield. I also love words and letters, so I must mention betraisefold’s Word Laddrynth series and iglew’s Word Ladder: Seven-Letter Author quiz. In addition, the constant high quality of Mimbleton’s word ladders is impressive.

5) What are your favorite contributed quizzes from an entirely different category?

One of the most well-constructed word ladders I have played is NYYanks’ Rainbow Word Ladder. A few of my favorite Geography quizzes are (in no particular order) mrsiriustab’s Country Splicing quiz, Krypton’s Planet Countries quiz, and puckett86’s Letter Pair Country Pair quiz because they all incorporate knowledge from both geography and playing with words/letters.

6) Are there any quizzes you’ve made that didn’t get the attention you were hoping for?

I am so happy and grateful to have been well-received by Sporcle, but I would love for all of my contributed quizzes to be played more often!

7) Who’s a user whose games you think deserves more attention?

NYYanks and teddy109768 are two users who I notice have been making a number of well-designed quizzes recently, and I would love to see them get published more often.
