Better Know a Curator: vikZ

The Sporcle blog started a new series which highlights some of our hard-working curators. Curators are editors for a specific subcategory, and their diligent work finding great quizzes from their subcategories (and sometimes others) helps to shape the site. We asked our curators to complete an interview of sorts, and we’ll be sharing their responses here on the blog.

This next post is from vikZ, curator for tennis and logic.

1) How did you first get involved with playing Sporcle?

In my business class in my last year of high school, my teacher was talking about the importance of branding and handed us out a printed quiz of corporate logos that we had to guess what the logos were for. I wouldn’t hear about Sporcle until about a year later, but then I recognized that the logo quiz I did in that business class was the Corporate Logos 2 quiz from Sporcle.

2) What are your favorite published quizzes from your subcategory?

In logic, I’d say Carmen Sandiego Logic Quest, though I enjoy all of the published logic quizzes so far.

In tennis, Grand Slam Tennis Champions A-Z is my favourite. It’s slightly different than the “Can you name everyone…” that most tennis quizzes have, but it still requires a lot of tennis knowledge, so the quiz stands out nicely.

3) What are your favorite contributed quizzes from your subcategory?

For logic, Avoid Tic-Tac-Toe would definitely be my favourite. It is such a basic premise but the quiz works wonderfully! Also it’s always a breath of fresh air to find a quiz in the logic section that isn’t a grid-shaped logic puzzle. I still love those logic puzzles too, but I definitely like having a variety in my subcategory too.

For tennis, Every Top Ten ATP Player Since 2000. Definitely tricky since the bottom half of the top 10 rotates much faster than the top half.

4) What are your favorite published quizzes from an entirely different category?

My favourite by far is Commonest English Words. I have played this quiz over and over again, and it took me around 40 tries to finally get perfect. Of course, I had to score perfect when I was logged out of my account so I have to try to get perfect on that quiz again sometime soon.

Also one I love a lot is Every 5 Letter Word as well as every quiz in this series. I had a blast aiming for perfect in every single quiz in the series.

5) What are your favorite contributed quizzes from an entirely different category?

Sporcle Boggle. I am a HUGE boggle fan and I’ve played this one a couple of times. I wait about a week since my last play and try to outdo myself. I wish it was possible for the quiz to feature a new board each time, but at least there are a few sequels to this quiz that has kept me busy.

6) Are there any quizzes you’ve made that didn’t get the attention you were hoping for?

Generally I think that most of my quizzes that deserve attention get it. The only quizzes I can think of that I thought would get more attention are Mario Games by Villain and Trivia Path. I can’t complain though because there are quizzes I made that got more attention than I thought it would, so it all evens out.

7) Who’s a user whose games you think deserves more attention?

There are a lot of users I like, but at the same time a lot of them already have a lot of attention. Two people I think definitely deserve more are skuban and Treverbeast454. I’m sure they will both get the attention they deserve to have in the near future as they both make amazing quizzes.

  1. VikZ: If your favorite is the Commonest English Words list, I have a 300-word version (linked in my name) based on a new source. It searched over 700 BILLION words in Google books and determined over 97,000 words that were each used over 100,000 times!

  2. Thanks for the blog post Sporcle! It’s greatly appreciated!
@RockGolf I really enjoyed playing it. It’s going to take me forever to get perfect on that quiz but hey that’s a challenge.
