| Peru was not named after an individual. There are a number of stories about the origin of the name. In one of them, the Spanish captured a native near the mouth of the river, and asked him the name of the country. He responded, "Beru" and "Pelu." While some people believe that he was giving his own name and the name of the river, that is not how the Spanish understood it. There was never any intention for the country to be named after this man. |
