Very rarely do I ask for more time, but this quiz could use it. I was still thinking and typing right up until the end.

Maybe a sequel please? Like between 1970 and 1990. I really enjoyed this quiz and I hope to see another.

isaiah thomas says ncaa basketball only. are we to believe that the washington husky has been on the cover of si more than the piston legend? or that he only appeared on the cover during his brief ncaa coaching stint? or is it just a typo?

Tim Tebow 7, Jerry Rice 4. Yeah, that sounds about right. I was surprised not to see Larry Johnson, Christian Laettner, or any of Michigan's Fab 5 on here. SI must not have gotten into college basketball until the late 90s.

Damn! A lot of names aren't on the list. Maybe they had 0-2 appearances, but still, very surprising.

@swills13: Yes, it is actually the Washington Husky. In the past 5 or so years, SI has been releasing the regional covers which leads to many more college athletes receiving covers (like Thomas, Kalin Lucas, and Chalmers).

The name "Isiah Thomas" is spelled incorrectly in your quiz.

@matthew67899: The Detroit Pistons' great Isiah Thomas is spelled like that, but the person who made 3 SI covers was Isaiah Thomas of the University of Washington basketball team, which is spelled correctly.

@zhambsch: Ah, I didn't think about regional covers. That makes a lot more sense as to why there were so many recent college hoops players, while explaining the absence of Laettner and others from the 90s which I mentioned above.

Takeaway: If you want to get onto SI's cover at least three times, don't waste your time winning 15 men's tennis Grand Slam titles. Instead, try to strangle your coach. Sheesh. (5 globes for the quiz, though)

Fun quiz! Since SI started in 1954, 33 athletes have appeared on the cover 10 or more times: http://www.sporcle.com/games/austinlee/sports_illustrated_cover_appearances

Sorry yanks, but american sports are pretty rubbish. I admit some of these guys are legends, but there are far too many american footballers. American football is just rugby, but worse in every way.

@joehemmings- thanks for your input. now go cheer for a 90 minute soccer match that ends 0-0 and leave us alone. @ everyone else- it's disgusting how many legends of sport Tim Tebow beats out on this list. Let's all just agree right now that he is far from the greatest player in college football history
