Well, except for the fact that the Cavs will probably only win about 20 games this season after all. And going 42-40 in a then amazing Northwest Divison (every team there had a winning record) with a roster where Carlos Arroyo, DeShawn Stevenson, and freaking Greg Ostertag are your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best players...that's a no-brainer COTY win.
And you're wrong about the award only going a turnaround; there is plenty of precedent for a team everyone thought would suck to hit .500 and win the award, such as Doc Rivers in 1999-2000 and the afore-mentioned Sam Mitchell in 2006-2007. By the way, in 2003-2004, Sloan DID win coach of the year from the Sporting News...which was decided upon by actual fellow NBA coaches, not the media. |
