The idea of continents as we know today is a Classical concept, originating in Ancient Greece. The Greeks divided the known world into 3 continents: Europe, Asia and Libya (Africa) and even they did not have agreed boundaries between them. This was thousands of years before plate tectonics were discovered. As a flat Earth in a geocentric Universe prove, modern science and ancient ideas don't mix well.
The North American plate roughly corresponds with the older concept of North America. However, geologists have shown that there are major differences, namely that vast amounts of Asian land lie on the NA plate. This shows that the NA plate cannot be used to accurately decide what is and is not North American. If we disregard plates, the island of Iceland is closer to the European mainland than that of North America and is on a similar Longitude to Western Iberia. Its culture, language, politics and history are European and the majority its residents consider themselves European. In fact, most indicators show Iceland to be wholly European. |
