It didn't accept either Oprah or Winfrey
Aug 14th, 2010 at 11:17 GMT
@AutonomusPlebian: Fixed. At first the software could not believe that any nation would vote for her as one of their top ten nationals (but then it saw some of the others!)

Pim Fortuyn, really :p? Crazy Netherlands:)
Aug 14th, 2010 at 12:03 GMT
It didn't accept Presley or MLK/King for me, but that's probably my computers problem. I'm very very ashamed that Fortuyn was elected as biggest Dutchman ever, but this was 2 years after he got killed. He's definitely not no. 1 anymore if someone would do this poll again. Probably Wilders.. (sorry for him, he's crazy :P)

There are plenty of dictators and murderers in the answers and extended lists. I have included some of the worst offenders that made the top 100 list as bonus answers.

@JeroAdmi: Should be working for both answers now.

Probably I'm just slow, but the time seemed short. Maybe it was all the time I wasted trying to spell Beethoven.

I've the same small complaint as in the Greatest Britons quiz: More info on the tips, such as a broad time-frame when the person lived. It's pretty much impossible to know that Italians voted Laura Pausini as one of their top 10 compatriots... PS. It's GIUseppe Verdi

@PurppuraSuihku: Thank you for your comments. I will see whether I can fit in more data. It is obviously a very hard quiz and some of the nominees are bizarre. Have corrected the Verdi typo (the quiz accepts surnames in all instances, so I assume that everyone would have still got this one).

How did the French not vote Bonaparte or Voltaire into the Top 10?
Nov 13th, 2010 at 15:51 GMT
@tulliuscicero: I would agree that Voltaire should be there, but Napoleon Bonarparte? He kept France at war for nearly the whole 16 years of his rule and was ultimately defeated. During this time he waged war at various times against Britain, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Sweden, Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany, Nassau, Brunswick, Hannover and the Netherlands (plus a number of smaller states). He attempted to impose his rule on all of Europe. In addition to France, he imposed his family or himself as the regal ruler of Rome, Italy, Naples, Holland, Spain, Westphalia and Tuscany. Whatever his qualities as an administrator (e.g. metrification, Napoleonic law code etc) and his brilliance as a military leader; he should be best remembered as a failed dictator, nepotist and warmonger and he ended his days as a sad paranoid on a barren rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Ronald Reagan? Im really worried now.
Feb 9th, 2011 at 01:22 GMT
I don't have a problem with Reagan but Bush? Oprah?

picasso might have been spanish, but he spent most of his life in France, no Salvador Dali?

I saw the title and I immediately thought Red Rum and Crisp in 1973. Good quiz, just not what I was hoping for!

I quit after George W. Bush.

Great quiz, really well researched.

Why are there only dates for the first category (France) and part of the second (Germany)?
