| @tulliuscicero: I would agree that Voltaire should be there, but Napoleon Bonarparte? He kept France at war for nearly the whole 16 years of his rule and was ultimately defeated. During this time he waged war at various times against Britain, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Sweden, Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany, Nassau, Brunswick, Hannover and the Netherlands (plus a number of smaller states). He attempted to impose his rule on all of Europe. In addition to France, he imposed his family or himself as the regal ruler of Rome, Italy, Naples, Holland, Spain, Westphalia and Tuscany. Whatever his qualities as an administrator (e.g. metrification, Napoleonic law code etc) and his brilliance as a military leader; he should be best remembered as a failed dictator, nepotist and warmonger and he ended his days as a sad paranoid on a barren rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. |
