It was briefly occupied by Cesare Borgia's armies in 1503, Giulio Alberoni, papal governor of Ravenna in 1739, and briefly by Nazi and then Allied armies during the Battle of Monte Pulito in September 1944. The Allies stayed for a couple months after the battle, but then sovereignty was reestablished. |
