A good quiz, but can you explain your inclusion of San Marino? I had always thought that San Marino had been continuously independent since 301 AD. It certainly wasn't a part of the Holy Roman Empire between 800 and 1806. It enacted it's own constitution in 1600 and was recognised as independent by the Holy See in 1291.

@Jam1: Many of the countries were independent at various times. Being independent did not disqualify membership. Austria, Bavaria, Bohemia and many many more countries were both independent and part of the "Empire". As Voltaire was supposed to have said it was "...neither holy, nor Roman nor an empire".

Shouldn't Spain and Andorra (i.e. the Spanish March) be included?

@carbon_rod: That was the Carolingian Empire. These territories remained with Francia after the Treaty of Verdun (843). I may revise the dates used on the quiz. 800 is the traditional date for the commencement of the HRE but the majority of France (including the Spanish Marches) is not normally included.

I'm trying to remember my Age of Empires 2 history. Did they establish any of these "Crusader States" in the middle east?

@Skogs: No. You are thinking of the Order of the Teutonic Knights which is unconnected. I am about to release a quiz on the states formed by the various holy orders.

I would say the Vatican was part of the Empire in the Middle Ages.

@peczek: Königsberg was a considerable distance from the Eastern border of the Empire. The Eastern expansion of etnic Germans in the Middle Ages was never matched by a similar expansion of the Empire. Prussia was always outside the Empire, although many of its Western possessions including Brandenburg were inside.

@johnlk: The Empire never extended as far south as Rome. The Papal States were explicitly outside of the Empire. The original territory was created in 754-756 in the Donation of Pepin and the specific territory was codified by Charlemagne in 781. This arrangement was ratified by Otto I in the Diploma Ottonianum (962). I agree that this "independent status" depended on the cooperation of the Holy Roman Emperors in the early medieval period, but the legal position was not in doubt.

Was all of Slovakia outside the HRE? I suppose all of it must have been in Hungary/Austria-Hungary.

@AdamBishop: As far as I can tell the border between the Czech lands (and in particular Moravia) and Slovakia has remained unchanged in several hundred years and was coincidentally the Eastern border of the Empire. This applied when Bohemia was an independent state (995-1490); in personal union with the Kingdom of Hungary (1490-1526); in Personal union with Austria (1526-1648) and a possession of Austria (1648-1804).

Really really picky, but wouldn't Sopron have been part of the HRE, and therefore a tiny bit of Hungary too?

Well, now that I look more, I'm not finding maps including Sopron (Odenburg), but I am finding ones including Rome, eg: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cd/Map_of_the_Holy_Roman_Empire_in_the_10th_century.png

And re: Slovakia, remember that the only border isn't wit Czech Rep., but also with Austria, and that Slovakia has just a little on the W side of the Danube. Some maps on wiki seem to include this, some don't. Without a strict determination of the delimitation, however, I think it might be hard to decide. Bonus?

I still question the idea that Rome was never part of the Empire. The Popes always had independent authority, but one can certainly find maps of the medieval Empire which include Rome (and, thus, the Vatican). Otto III even made Rome his capital.

Riga, in Latvia, was a Free City of the Holy Roman Empire from 1521 (and possibly earlier) until 1581. Estonia was also part of the Holy Roman Empire in 1207 as Livonia.

@tbwilson: I have several quizzes under construction including those that you have mentioned. As we go back further in history they take a bit longer to research especially regarding the overlap with modern territories. Watch this space and I will release some before Christmas.

It should accept "luaG" for ecnarF. I've put them backwards so as to not reveal the answers during a split second look by those who have not played the quiz.
