| @zeppelinoid: You make a compelling argument for both of your points, but I think you might be barking up the wrong tree. Any quiz about a single letter of countries is always going to follow Sporcle conventions. If you have an issue with Cote D'Ivoire as opposed to Ivory Coast or with Congoes listed elsewhere in the alphabet, I suggest you make the same comment on Sporcle's countries in alphabetical order quiz.
Also, not to be nitpicky, but the España, Deutschland, Nippon analogy doesn't quite work, as Spain, Germany, and Japan do not reject these translations of their names. As you point out, this situation is much more similar to that of Burma/Myanmar. In this respect, Sporcle conventions are quite consistent, as it is always alphabetized under Myanmar, rather than Burma, just as Cote D'Ivoire is used in place of Ivory Coast. However, both Burma and Ivory Coast are accepted as well on nearly every non-alphabet-based Sporcle quiz. I'm not necessarily saying this system is better than what you're suggesting, but it's not wrong.
PS: I happen to agree with you about the Congoes, but at least Sporcle is consitent |
