uh, please accept Farsi as well as Persian... it's the official name of the language, and I kept typing it being sure that there were enough speakers.

Interesting French being number 11 and it's one of Canada's two official languages.
And if you live in Toronto, you can probably name each area these languages are predominantly spoken (Markham, Mississiauga, Woodbridge...)

I've never understood English speakers insisting that we call it Farsi. We don't call French "français" or Spanish "espagnol," so why call Persian "farsi"? Even native Persian speakers prefer that we call it Persian. Farsi is the name of the language in Persian, not in English.

The beautiful thing about the city of Toronto is that the Leafs are still worthless no matter what language you speak.

Thanks! For the record, since the source had both Mandarin, Cantonese, etc as well as a generic "Chinese - not specified", I combined all those into a single entry. For all others I stayed true to the source, and so the various entries for the languages from India, etc.

Add another 500 to "Tamil". I typed in "Punjab" twice, wasn't smart enough to figure out the "i" at the end!

I was really hoping the Kannada language of India would be on this, but there are only 1,445 speakers in Toronto.

@Bretzky: Yo, nitpick. The name of Spanish in Spanish is "español"; you've got the French. Okay, I'm done. But on another topic, it's fairly interesting that none of the First Languages are represented.

I had the advantage of having worked in schools in Southern California, and just tried every language for which we had to report student numbers.

Great quiz - very interesting, fun and challenging to play. I wondered if there was any sizeable First Nation population in Toronto that spoke a native language? Guess not, or not big enough to be statistically significant.

@NoVan: You are correct, sir. My French was interfering with my Spanish. My French is definitely better than my Spanish and I often forget that the "gn" sound in French is done with a "ñ" in Spanish.

I am quite surprised that there are more French speakers in Toronto than Russian speakers. I hear people speaking Russian all the time, and I hardly ever hear people speaking French.

@ yony: Thanks for clarifying, b/c I was going to object to lumping together Mandarin and Cantonese. Those two languages have as wide a gulf as do the Indian and Pakistani languages.

I suppose the great number of Indian languages has to do with the free movement of peoples between colonies of the British Empire?

Why Toronto, out of interest? So far as I know there is not one for New York, London, or more famously multicultural cities?

@I am sorry Uhlan, but you do not statistically get any more multicultural than Toronto. Do not know what you mean by "famously"

Gujarati is a language mainly spoken in Gujarat, India but there are some speakers in other countries around the world particularly in the UK where it is offered as a GCSE subject. It doesn't seem that obscure to me but I guess I'm from the UK and my best friend speaks it :)

I really don't think it is that surprising that Aboriginal languages didn't make this list. There isn't a generally large Aboriginal population in the GTA anyway, and the odds of that population learning their own language before English in this day in age are slim to none.
