| Offa was King of Mercia (roughly the English Midlands) and overlord of most of the other Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms (Wessex, Essex, Sussex, Kent, East Anglia and Lyndsey, but not Northumbria which covered roughly 1/3rd of England). He was the first man styled Rex Anglorum (King of England) and probably Bretwalda (leader or lord of Britain), However he is now rarely if ever considered to be the first King of all England. That honour goes to Egbert 35 years later. Knut is the Danish version of Canute who certainly was King of all England. It is probably as good an answer as Offa. |
