| I've seen the usage of directions translated and the word "new" having pronounciations rendered in the similar quiz with the Greek language. The same exists in Turkish too. To add to the confusion, the standard rule which says "The foreign place names written in Latin Alphabet in its original language is left the same, unless it has a common used Turkish name e.g. Londra for London etc" are interpreted differently by every other person, so that you can see California and Kaliforniya, Colorado and Kolorado, Washington and Vaşington being both used. The states containing New are never written as "Yeni", though there are some examples of New York written as Nevyork, deliberately used by the writer, the word "Nev-" being a Persian loanword meaning new. Particularly in old books New Mexico is translated as "Yeni Meksika" and I've seen one example of Nova Scotia, the Canadian province translated as "Yeni İskoçya" (meaning: New Scotland). The states having a direction are mostly written as the direction translated (Güney Dakota, Kuzey Dakota), but this time the different interpretations apply too and you can see "West Virginia", "Batı Virginia" and "Batı Virjinya" used. |
