Great quiz! ...and I got all 14 too :) Shouldn't Niger be among them? Being African and landlocked.

Probably the first time I've noticed that Ethiopia doesn't touch the ocean. It's just so close over there. Mighty Djibouti blocking it's path. All 5 bordering countries have coastline, but not poor Ethiopia.

Ethiopia used to have a coastline before Eritrea broke away.

Yay, you made the third one! Is South America next (although that would only have Paraguay and Bolivia) or Oceania?

Landlocked countries of Oceania would be a fairly pointless quiz though. :)

I believe it would be nice if South Sudan were a bonus answer.

It'd make it tougher, but with 41% getting them all, perhaps you should try it as a 1 min quiz.

I think the time is good. I'm not one who just likes to type in random countries super fast and see if it works, I like to try to think of the map and see if I can come up with the right answer. Good quiz.

Good quiz. Never (well, eventually) would have guessed Ethiopia without the population hint.

While landlocked countries of Oceania or the Caribbean might be pointless, it should be possible to construct a quiz of "sea-locked" countries of Oceania, those whose territorial waters never touch open sea (international waters) because they're completely surrounded by the territorial waters of other nations.

I have the 53 countries of Africa memorized by letter. 8 S, 7 M, 7 C (including both Congos) 5 G, 4 E, 4 B, 3 L, 3 N, 3 T, 2 A, 2 Z, and one D, R, U, I (Ivory Coast), and K. How does everyone else do it?

@Everblue: I barely escaped this one! I actually almost forgot about CENTRAL African Republic! @ImpromptuJ: I just memorized them by playing the Countries of Africa quiz repeatedly. No special tricks. I just go in a big circle around the continent.

I remember Africa by dividing it into smaller parts, like "Mediterranean coast", "Saharan states", "Horn of Africa", "Small West African coastal" and so on. The groups are to large to forget altogether, but still small enough to memorize every country in them easily. I do roughly the same thing with Asia and Europe.

How do I do it? Well, I just desperately type in whatever countries I think of, pray they are landlocked, curse when they aren't, and end up missing about half of the answers. I don't think I'm alone in this.

@shakescene: that's a brilliant idea with the 'sea-locked' countries! I mean you'd have to account for non-territorial waters completely surrounded by territorial waters being kind of like a Caspian coast for the land-locked nations, but it would be a blitz. : It's guaranteed that when you finally
do
remember East Timor, it will be with 2 seconds left, you'll get it in just as time expires, and you'll find out the quizmaker hasn't provided any alternatives for "Timor-Leste".

I trace a path across the continent in my head, starting with Egypt going west, then down to Mauritania and go east, snaking down the east coast to South Africa, then up the west coast to end up at the Gambia and Senegal. Somewhere in there I grab the six island countries. It's neat to see how other people do it, too, although now that I've memorized them my way I would crash and burn if I had to name them, for example, alphabetically.

I like this quiz: it reminds us of the geopolitical challenge for Africa. Trade for land-locked states means crossing European-drawn borders, with tariffs all along the way. Coastal states need to ease these trade barriers for the benefit of the whole continent.

I was hoping to celebrate South Sudan day on this quiz, but it's still a bonus. I remember the African countries by breaking them up into sections (N. Africa, S. Africa, Sahara, the Horn, Western Africa and the six island countries.)
